Students on the MSc Construction Project Management course at the University of Portsmouth London took part in a valuable careers-focused session this week, delivered by representatives from the Institution of Civil Engineers Early Careers Network (ICE ECN) London.
The session formed part of the Strategic Management workshop led by Senior Lecturer Dr Don Samuel and provided students with practical insight into professional pathways, networking, and skills development within the construction and civil engineering sectors.
The ICE ECN London team – including Site Visit Coordinator Ibrahim Kintu and Co-Chair Tabark Majid – introduced students to the purpose of the network, its events, and how early-career professionals can engage with the ICE community. They outlined the ECN’s mission to support students, graduates, apprentices and technicians through professional development activities, networking opportunities, and access to real-world industry experiences.
Students learned about the breadth of opportunities available through ICE ECN, including:
The team emphasised the importance of building industry connections early, highlighting the message that “your network is your net worth” and encouraging students to take up ICE’s free student membership to begin forming professional links and accelerate personal and career development.
Following the ICE talk, Dr Don Samuel led a hands-on careers workshop using his bespoke Construction Management Career Card Game. This interactive activity encouraged students to think critically about job roles, skill sets, and career pathways in the construction sector. Working in groups, students were challenged to design, adjust, and justify job descriptions within construction teams using combinations of skill, allocation and strategy cards. The exercise prompted discussion on how different roles require varied skill distributions, how real-world constraints influence responsibilities, and how graduates can position themselves for success in an evolving industry landscape.
Reflecting on the value of the workshop, students noted that the activity helped them better understand the diverse career routes available after completing the MSc CPM and gave them space to reflect on their strengths, areas for development, and long-term ambitions.
Bringing the ICE Early Careers Network into the classroom demonstrates UoP London’s commitment to providing construction students with practical, industry-aligned, and future-focused learning opportunities. Through sessions like these, students gain not only professional insight but also the confidence and clarity they need to navigate their next steps post-graduation.
