Supporting your child on their journey to university is an exciting time but it can also come with a few nerves, particularly as results day draws near. At the University of Portsmouth London, we recognise the vital role parents and guardians play during this period. That’s why we’re here to keep you informed, reassured, and confident in helping your child navigate their next steps, especially if they’re considering Clearing.
Clearing is a UCAS process that helps students find the right university place for them by matching applicants to courses that still have spaces available. It’s used by a wide range of students, from those who’ve changed their minds about their original choices, to those who decide to apply after the main deadline, or who want to explore new opportunities after receiving their results. For many, it’s a valuable second chance to find a course and university that fits them best.
Clearing officially opens in early July, but the majority of students enter Clearing on A-Level results day in mid-August. Universities publish available course vacancies on the UCAS website and their own sites, and places are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so timing can be important.
If an applicant has received all decisions by May 14th, they must reply to their offers by June 5th. Failure to do so will result in the offer being declined by default. It's essential to keep track of UCAS deadlines to avoid missing out on any opportunities. You can find a detailed Clearing timeline in our checklist.
Clearing hotlines often open early on results day, some as early as 8am. It’s a good idea for you and your child to be up and ready to review their results, research available courses, and make contact with universities promptly. Encourage your child to have their UCAS ID, exam results, and personal statement on hand.
Your child will need to speak directly with universities when calling about Clearing places. As a parent, you can help by sitting nearby, helping them stay calm, and assisting with note-taking or researching other course options in the background. Admissions teams will only be able to speak to the applicant unless they’ve previously given permission for someone else to act on their behalf.
If your child decides they want to go through Clearing but already holds an offer, they’ll need to use the UCAS self-release process. This is done via their UCAS Hub account and allows them to formally decline their place, making them eligible for Clearing. It's a big decision, so make sure they’ve spoken to another university and secured interest in a new place before self-releasing.
UCAS is the central hub for everything Clearing-related. Their website provides key dates, a live course search tool, and guidance on how the process works. Encourage your child to check the UCAS site regularly in the lead-up to results day: www.ucas.com/clearing
Results day can be emotional, especially if things don’t go as hoped. Your reassurance and calm presence can help your child think clearly and make informed decisions under pressure.
Even before results day, encourage your child to research potential Clearing options. Look at university websites to see which courses are likely to be available and what entry requirements may look like.
Most Clearing offers are made over the phone, directly with admissions teams. While you can help them prepare what to say or sit with them during the call, the university will need to speak to the student themselves to make an offer.
If your child receives a Clearing offer, there may be new logistics to consider such as accommodation, travel, or finances. Be ready to explore these together and help them weigh up the pros and cons of each option.
University websites often have dedicated Clearing pages and helplines for students and parents. At the University of Portsmouth London, our team is here to talk you through the process and answer any questions you might have about courses, student support, or next steps.
Every year, thousands of students find the right course for them through Clearing and go on to thrive at university. Your guidance and encouragement can make all the difference during this time of uncertainty and discovery.
If your child is considering Clearing this year, we encourage you to explore our Clearing information hub and join our live chats or Clearing webinars this summer. We’re here to help every step of the way.
