As a Master’s student at the University of Portsmouth London campus, I always look for opportunities to connect what I’m learning in class with what’s actually happening in the construction industry. That’s why it was such a privilege to attend a recent in-person talk by Paul Gandy, President of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). His visit wasn’t just informative-it was a genuine reminder of why I chose this career path in the first place.
What stood out most was his emphasis on responsibility in construction project management. He compared taking on unmanaged risk to gambling, which really stuck with me. In an industry where decisions can impact lives and communities, being strategic and structured isn’t optional- it’s essential. He spoke about the importance of good governance and how it creates transparency and discipline, and he made it clear that true competence goes far beyond just having qualifications. It’s about behaviour, decision-making, and staying committed to lifelong learning. That really hit home for me as a student. Finishing university isn’t the end of learning, it’s the start of a professional journey that requires constant growth.
Mr. Gandy also shared honest insights from his own career, including the value of sideways steps and learning from mistakes. That level of honesty was reassuring- it reminded me that success in this industry isn’t always a straight line. Traits like resilience, curiosity, and adaptability are just as important as technical skills.
More than anything, the session left me feeling inspired and better prepared for the road ahead. It motivated me to keep developing, through my studies, through mentorship, and through any real-world opportunities I can find. I’m grateful to be at a university that encourages these connections between students and industry leaders, and this experience has only strengthened my commitment to building a meaningful career in the built environment.
