Employability week

4 February 2026

Undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Portsmouth London recently took part in Employability Period, a programme designed to support career development and build confidence for life beyond university.

Across two weeks, students engaged in a range of on-campus and online activities at Juniper House, focused on developing practical employability skills. Activities included professional headshot photography, workshops on finding part-time work, and guidance on balancing work alongside academic study.

Volunteering was a key theme throughout the period, with an interactive Why Volunteer? session led by University of Portsmouth staff. This session explored the importance of local volunteering, highlighting how giving back to the community can strengthen employability while creating meaningful local impact.

Discussions built on the strengths and experiences of students who had already volunteered with The Conversation Volunteers in Walthamstow, supporting local environmental initiatives by helping to plant greenery in areas across Walthamstow. Students shared reflections on how these experiences supported personal growth, skill development and a stronger sense of community connection.

Students also took part in online careers sessions covering CV and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and using AI tools for careers support, with opportunities to receive tailored advice and mock interview feedback from the Careers team.

Cleo Ding, Student Experience and Employability Lead, said:

It’s been a great few weeks. Students really engaged with the sessions and asked thoughtful questions. I’m confident they’ve taken away practical ideas and inspiration for their next steps
