Support and advice for parents and guardians during this exciting transition

Starting university is a major life change—for your child and for you. Whether your child is moving out or commuting from home, they’ll be adjusting to a new routine, greater independence, and the demands of university-level study. Your support, encouragement, and reassurance can make all the difference during this transitional period.

At University of Portsmouth London Campus, we understand how big this moment is for families. Here's a practical guide to help you support your child before they start university and during their early weeks with us.

If Your Child Is Living at Home

Many students at UoP London live locally and choose to stay at home while studying. While this can be a great way to ease the transition into university life, it’s still important that they build the skills needed for independence.

Encourage Independence

Even when living at home, students should be encouraged to take responsibility for everyday tasks, including:

  • Doing their own laundry

  • Preparing basic meals

  • Managing their study time effectively

  • Keeping their personal space clean and organised

These routines foster self-reliance and prepare them for the responsibilities of adult life.

Support Their Social Life

UoP London is a diverse and inclusive campus, welcoming students from around the world. Encourage your child to engage with new peers, explore different cultures, and build their communication skills. Attending local events, stepping outside their usual social circles, and spending time with classmates outside of lectures can all help make their university experience more fulfilling. 

Establish Healthy Boundaries

University brings new routines, deadlines, and demands. It’s important to have open conversations about boundaries—such as respecting quiet study time, managing shared spaces, and adjusting household expectations. A supportive home environment will help your child balance their academic life with personal growth.

The First Few Weeks

Stay in Touch (But Give Them Space)

Before they start, talk about how often you’ll check in—whether by phone, video call or messaging. Agreeing on a balance helps set healthy expectations and gives them room to settle in while knowing you’re there if needed.

Registering with a GP

If your child is living at home, encourage them to register with a local GP to ensure they have access to healthcare when needed.

Encourage Social Connections

Walthamstow is a vibrant area offering a wide range of community events and activities where students can connect with others.

These events are a great opportunity to build friendships outside of the classroom and explore what the local area has to offer.

Know Who to Contact

Your child may face challenges like homesickness, academic stress, or difficulties adjusting. UoP London offers health and wellbeing support, and our staff are here to help.

If you’re worried about your child’s wellbeing and they’re not reaching out for help, don’t hesitate to contact the University—supporting students is our top priority.

Ongoing Support: Beyond the First Weeks

Be a Mentor and Guide

Continue being someone your child can turn to for advice. Encourage conversations around wellbeing, time management, or even difficult topics. If needed, direct them to appropriate university support services.

Discuss Finances

Talk about budgeting, saving, and how to manage student loans or part-time work. Financial confidence helps students feel more in control and reduces stress.

Support Yourself Too

This is a big shift for you as well. It's natural to feel a mix of pride, worry, and even sadness. Make time for your own wellbeing, and reach out to your own support network if you need to.
