Pre-Departure Webinar

Um I'll begin with the presentation.

0:05

So first of all um you welcome to the pre-eparture webinar as I mentioned. So this webinar will just give you um you

0:12

know advice and information and help you prepare in order of what you need to do uh for you uh when you come and arrive

0:20

to the UK as well as arrive to the University of Port of London campus. Just to give you a brief uh background

0:26

on the campus uh it is located in Wam forest which is a bar in London. Uh

0:32

Derry itself to be specific is called Wam Wam Stow which is 20 minutes from central London. The campus itself is

0:38

brand new. Also Daria has very good transport links to the rest of the UK and Europe as well. Um the B of Wolf

0:46

from Forest is known to be a bar of culture as well. um we have you know one of the you know largest outdoor markets

0:52

in Europe for example. So these are key dates for you to

0:58

remember. Please make a note of this. So registration uh in other words enrollment will begin on the 22nd of

1:04

September and also classes will start the following week on the 29th. So you

1:10

would need to arrive to the UK before the 22nd of September. It's not a Monday. Um so yeah so please make a note

1:17

of these uh key dates in so that you'll be able to you know arrive on time and be able to register online uh register

1:23

on time. So moving on to your application and

1:29

visa. So this just a quick recap of the

1:34

application process. So by now you've all should have been should have completed all of these steps. So by now

1:41

you should have um accepted your offer in the applicant view. upload any required documents as well as well as

1:47

upload the required documents on cash shield as well as paid your deposit or provide your financial guarantee if you

1:53

are a sponsored student as well as apply for your student root visa.

2:00

I'll now pass it on to my colleague Fazmina who will go on to the visa process.

2:08

Good morning everyone. My name is Fazmina Muhammed Khal. I'm the immigration adviser at the University of

2:13

Portsmouth London. Uh I'll be going through with you the visa application

2:18

process for you to join us as a student uh uh at the University of Portsmouth London. Um so the first stage in the

2:27

visa application process is for you to receive your confirmation of acceptance of studies which is your cast document.

2:34

You will be receiving this from the university once you've accepted your offer, paid your deposit, and provided

2:40

the required documentation to the university. You will have to ensure that all the

2:45

information that is in the CAS document is correct. And if you find any errors,

2:52

we advise you to contact the university as soon as possible in the given email

2:59

address, which is cast corrections@port.ac.uk. Um the next thing you'll have to prepare

3:06

before making your visa application is the proof of your finance. Um these are

3:13

in the form of bank documents, bank statements uh which need to show 28

3:18

consecutive days of the required amount in your bank account.

3:24

Um and also before making the visa application you will have to also ensure

3:30

that all the documentation that you will be submitting to the UK vi uh needs to

3:36

be in the English language or be translated uh by an official translator.

3:44

Mohammed if you can move on. Yeah. Um and

3:50

another document which we require to support the visa application is your TB test certificate. Uh most of you uh our

3:58

students uh will be requiring uh will be required to have a TB test certificate. These are valid for 6 months. So it'll

4:06

be prudent that you uh get this test done as soon as possible uh once you have the intention to study in the UK. I

4:13

would advise um you'll also have to prepare the visa application fee and immigration health

4:20

charge depending on the length of your course. Uh as students you will have to

4:25

pay the discounted immigration health charge. Um and you will be required to

4:30

pay this at the time of submitting your visa application online.

4:36

Once your visa application has been submitted, uh the UKVI normally has uh three weeks

4:43

to process your visa application. This is if you applied for the normal service. Uh during this time, it's

4:50

important that you keep an eye on the email that you use to make the visa application as you may be invited for a

4:58

credibility interview by the UKVI. So it's extremely crucial that you keep an eye on the email that you use uh to

5:06

make this visa application as you will be getting important updates on that including uh the decision uh of your

5:13

visa application. In the event that your visa application is refused uh your confirmation of

5:20

acceptance of studies will be uh cancelled by the university. You will

5:25

not be able to reuse this cast reference number to make a new visa application.

5:30

So in the event of a refusal, please ensure to contact the university and inform us with the refusal, providing us

5:38

with the refusal letter. And if you intend to uh still continue studying

5:43

with us, you will be needing a new cast reference number which the university will assist you in providing.

5:54

Um the most important bit in the visa application process on a student visa is

6:00

for you to meet the financial requirement which is a large sum. Um

6:06

with uh students you will be required to have sufficient funds to pay the first

6:11

year of your tuition fees plus a maintenance fund uh so that you'll be

6:17

able to u look after your needs while you're in the UK for the first uh 9

6:22

months. The total maintenance funds that you'll be required to show as we are a London

6:28

university would be £13,347 plus the remainder of the fees that you

6:35

have paid to the university. The amount you have paid to the university will be shown in your cast

6:40

document. But in the event that you have paid separate tition fees after uh the

6:47

cash has been sent to you, you'll be required to uh submit a receipt or

6:53

evidence of that payment. So you can then uh show a lower amount for the

6:59

financial requirement. Uh the funds need to be in your personal

7:04

account or it also could be in your parents' accounts. it funds cannot be

7:09

shown in the form of bonds, shares or any property or any investments.

7:15

If the financial uh requirement the funds required to meet the financial requirement is in your in the name of

7:22

your parents accounts, you will need to show evidence of your relationship to

7:27

your parents which will be be the birth certificate. Please make sure that it is translated

7:32

to English when you're submitting it. And also you will need a letter from your parents signed by both of them or

7:40

depending on who owns the account uh giving you consent to use these funds

7:45

and this letter will need to be submitted at the time of making your visa application.

7:51

Once again it's important to note that the funds should not dip at any point in the 28 consecutive days. The funds

7:58

should be uh equal to or above the amount required for the whole of the 28

8:04

days and the bank statement should be dated uh no less than 31 days before the

8:09

date of application

8:15

and uh like I've stressed before funds must be in your personal account and should be accessible instantly.

8:21

Uh the UKVI uses the OENDA um site to uh

8:27

convert currency. So please double check on that that it is equal or accurate.

8:33

Even a one pound dip will result in a refusal. So please ensure that you have

8:39

sufficient funds for all the uh consecutive 28 days.

8:44

Um if you are being sponsored by official financial sponsor then you will

8:49

need a letter confirming the sponsorship and if it does not cover the whole of the fees including your maintenance

8:56

funds the remainder of the funds will be need to be shown in your personal or

9:01

parents bank accounts. Um once again uh the UK VI are quite

9:07

particular um as to which financial institution holds these funds. Not all

9:13

financial institutions accepted. Uh it should be regulated by an appropriate regulatory body in your home country. Uh

9:21

that is also something you need to make note of and ensure your funds are in the right institution.

9:31

Um finally once you make your submit your student visa application you will receive an email confirming uh your

9:38

grant of your visa. Uh we are in August now. So from 15th of July u last month

9:46

2025 main applicants main student visa applicants will not be receiving

9:52

receiving a visa vette on their passport. uh you will be required to access a e

9:58

visa and the instructions will be given on your granting email. Please ensure to

10:05

read the granting email carefully including what's provided on the next steps which is the instructions on how

10:12

to access your e visa. You will be required to uh open a UKVI account uh

10:19

providing your passport details and also a picture of yourself and uh then you

10:25

will be granted access to your e visa account and on that you will need to access your e visa. Uh it is advised

10:33

that since the UK vi has completely transitioned from visa vignettes to e

10:38

visa for uh the student students coming to the UK from 15th July. You will need

10:44

to access your e visa prior to departing your home country as you will be

10:50

required to show your e visa at the border uh while leaving your country and

10:55

you might uh I mean have delays or cause issues if you do not have access to the

11:01

e visa. So our advice would be that as soon as you have access uh as soon as

11:07

you have been granted your um student visa, please read the granting letter

11:12

carefully and access your e visa and if you encounter any issues, please get in

11:18

touch with the university on the given email uh emails and we can advise you on

11:23

how to um troubleshoot any problems. The UK vi has issues but uh please do

11:30

contact us and we'll be happy to assist you. Once you have accessed your e visa,

11:36

please ensure that all your personal details are accurate. It's extremely important that your name, date of birth

11:42

and nationality match the one that is in your passport and uh the visa start and end date as

11:49

well is correct. And once again, if you have any issues, please don't hesitate to contact the university.

11:56

Um that's all from me and if there's any questions at the end I'll take it. Thank you.

12:01

Thank you Fasmina. Um yeah now moving on to um preparing to travel to UK. So I'll

12:07

just be going through a few tips to make sure that your arrival here uh becomes uh comes uh smoothly. So first of all uh

12:15

you need to make sure you arrange your accommodation in advance. Um book your flights once your visa is confirmed.

12:21

Also, you can book um you know your airport pickup or transport to your accommodation. Uh this one you need to

12:27

you need to do yourself. However, we do have um we do have a service uh where

12:32

where we have a airport meet and greet which my colleagues in student services can touch upon uh in more detail later

12:39

on in the presentation. Um also do ensure you pack smart. Uh check your luggage allowance and keep important

12:45

documents in your hand luggage. Uh please not please do not bring any food or plants with you. Um and also um

12:52

please make a note of um contact details here and the website link uh to find out

12:57

more information uh more useful information about traveling uh to the UK

13:02

in general. But yeah, please um I I um you know I urge you to make make a note

13:08

of these contact details in case you you know need any um assistance.

13:17

Okay. in terms of um arriving to the UK. So the recommended airport is uh London Heathro airport which is an hour and 9

13:24

minutes away from the campus. Other nearby airports include London Gatwick which is under an hour uh from

13:32

the campus, London Stanstead which is about 32 minutes away from the campus, London City Airport and also London

13:39

Luton as well. Um where the campus is located, it is right opposite the transport hub in Wolamto. So the train

13:46

and the bus station. So it's in a it's in a pretty, you know, good location. Quite quite busy. Like it wouldn't be,

13:54

you know, it wouldn't be hard to find us once you once you reach the area. Um

14:00

again, if you have any troubles, um you know, please do contact us as well.

14:07

Again, this is just some general top tips uh for when you are are traveling. So you know, please do not bring a lot

14:14

of cash with you. Uh we we recommend that you that beforehand that you pay your tuition fees and accommodation fees

14:20

electronically uh using applicant view as these are the quickest and easiest way to do them. Um also do ensure you

14:27

check with your airline carrier in terms of the amount of cash you are you are allowed to bring with you. So bring a

14:33

small amount of cash for the first month. Also bring a credit card or traveler's check as backup because in

14:40

the UK it takes about 2 weeks or longer to set up a bank account. Um most

14:45

students um you know they do they they tend to use a debit card slash mobile card payments from their UK bank account

14:52

in place of cash. Um so again if you have any um you know questions regarding

14:57

this please you know uh you know do do make sure you put a a question in the

15:03

chat and myself or one of my colleagues as well as our student ambassador Danish will be able to assist you and answer

15:08

your query. Okay. Okay. Um, I'll now pass on to my

15:13

colleague Hassan from the student services team who'll go more into more into detail about uh what you have to do

15:19

once you arrive at the university. Take it away Hassan. Thank you very much man. So yes, my name

15:26

is Hassan. I'm the student office manager for the London campus. I'm very much looking forward to meeting you all

15:33

once you arrive in country. So we'll just go over some tips here um when you

15:39

do first arrive. So, I think the most important thing when you do do arrive, make sure you do let your your friends

15:45

and family at home know that you've arrived safely. So, please do send them a message just to to let them know that.

15:51

Um, you will receive an email relatively soon with an Eventbrite link to register

15:58

for uh your registration here. Um so this will be as Muhammad said uh and

16:04

touched upon earlier this will be from the 22nd of September when we'll have our inerson registration. So please do

16:12

keep an eye out for uh an email from us. Um and this will be an event bright link where you can register for your your

16:19

specific time as well. So again make sure that you do attend all of the orientation and welcome events. Um so

16:26

they they will be arranged available to you from either online or um in person.

16:32

Um and again to reiterate what what Muhammad has said. So please do pay your tuition fees as well. So um just to

16:38

ensure that when we do come to register you in person um that there is no no

16:44

hold up as there can sometimes be um as we've experienced in previous intakes there can be a bit of a hold up if

16:49

tuition fees are not um uh resolved ahead of the time coming to campus. Um

16:56

so again try to complete your online registration as well and this will again

17:01

ensure that um we can get through the registration as quickly as possible. um

17:07

we will have student ambassadors on hand as well um to to assist if you you're unable to get through it but um it will

17:14

just ensure that your the process is as smooth as possible if you can complete as much of the online registration uh

17:21

before you come to campus. So again, making sure that you also have your e visa share code ready. Um this can

17:28

ensure that we we're able to complete your registration smoothly um and to ensure that we don't have to um follow

17:34

up with you later on um once you've got settled into to the campus.

17:41

Okay. So again just in terms of registration um you'll be sent an eventbrite link and it'll have a

17:47

specific time for you to attend. So please do adhere to that. say we are expecting a large number of students to

17:53

come to campus. So um it it is important that you do try and stick to to your time just so we can manage the flow of

17:59

people um in a in a sensible way as well. Um so on the day you'll have the

18:05

opportunity to print your student ID cards as well. So please don't worry

18:10

about that for for the time being. So once you've completed your registration um you have the opportunity to to get

18:16

your student ID card. In addition to this as well, you you'll have the chance to meet the rest of the team um and also

18:23

to to register with with a GP as well. So for any of your um course term

18:28

letters and so forth, it'll be on this once you've completed this process that will begin to be available to you. Um

18:35

information regarding your timetable. So I know that um that's something that a lot of students would be thinking about

18:41

and and wanting to know at the moment. Um this won't be provided just yet but once you are registered you'll have the

18:47

opportunity to see your timets uh as well. So again just to iterate information that you might know already.

18:53

There'll be two days on campus um with 4hour sessions on each day. There'll be

18:59

either morning or afternoon and then you'll have a 2hour online session as well. So again this is just to to to

19:06

give you a bit of flexibility with the ability to to work as well whilst you're you're you're studying. Okay. So one

19:12

thing that I should note at at this stage as well your timetables um are not able to be changed. So once they are

19:19

assigned that will be your your timetable for for the entire year um

19:24

further to to notice. So um that's just something to bear in mind as well. Whilst you might find a part-time job um

19:32

the priority is your studies. you are expected to attend every lesson um and

19:38

you would need to find work that goes around your studies and not the other way round. Okay. So, thank you very much

19:44

Muhammad. Can we go to next slide please? So, in in terms of some general tips

19:50

that that we can give to you. Um so, we would strongly recommend that students

19:56

look for areas where they can commute within 30 minutes to 1 hour of campus.

20:02

So, um, again, as Muhammad alluded to earlier, we're right next to Wolfamto Central Station. It's well linked. It's

20:09

on the Victoria line. Um, so it's quite easy to to get in and around as well, and it's well serviced by um various

20:15

travel hubs um around the the local area. So, again, we would have a look

20:21

into commuting within around 30 minutes to an hour. Um, so if you're in the

20:27

morning classes, you would be expected to arrive before 9 9:00 a.m. And again, if you're uh scheduled for the afternoon

20:33

classes, the afternoon class would start at 1:30 p.m. So you would be at

20:38

university for 4 hours as well. So again, just to make your life a bit more convenient, we would recommend that 30

20:44

minutes to to 1 hour as well. So as you might have noticed, I have mentioned

20:50

attendance a couple of times already. So if you do not attend uh as an

20:55

international student, you are strongly at risk of potentially being withdrawn from the the the course. So the

21:03

university expects students to attend 100% of classes. So you really do need

21:09

to take this on board with um attendance and attending on time as well. Um so

21:15

this is really really important um in terms of getting to grips with this. out

21:21

and we'll touch upon this again further in in another presentation uh once you arrive um where we'll go a bit more in

21:28

in depth in terms of the the the attendance aspect but please note it is really really important that you do

21:34

attend your classes um and unfortunately students have been withdrawn for not attending classes previously. So um

21:42

please do take that on board. Um if for whatever reason that you do need to

21:47

leave the country as well, please contact the student service team as soon as possible. Um so we can discuss any

21:54

any reasons as to why. But again this is very much strongly discouraged.

22:02

So in terms of orientation, so first of all, we'll go through student registration, but there will be the

22:09

opportunity to do a campus tour and a local tour of Wolf from Stow as well, where we'll go over um where to find

22:16

perhaps local banks, uh some of the key restaurants that that students and staff would recommend as well. Um and just to

22:24

help you get settled in and get an understanding for the the local area as well. We'll look to have some u

22:29

workshops throughout the the year as well. Um but there will be some online links to sent to to students so you can

22:36

take part in these. So again some of the student services um

22:43

or the umbrella that student services can can provide here. We do cover a lot of um areas here. So it'll be from

22:50

student well-being service uh for multiase chapency um again letting you

22:56

know about your personal tutors um again for the initial inquiries

23:01

regarding student finance support careers and guidance academic skills support um all students here once you

23:07

have your university email addresses set up would have access to LinkedIn learning as well so you can partake in

23:14

those those courses as well whilst you're you're studying here um and there will be um provisions as well for

23:20

insessional English programs uh throughout the year as well.

23:26

So in terms of the key key contacts, so please do make a note of these. We will be sending the these slides to you as

23:32

well afterwards. So you will have all this information to hand. Um so most of

23:37

the time you will be contacting um student life London uh for any of your

23:43

queries. So we do aim to to respond to students within a 48 hour uh period. Uh

23:48

so that's not including the weekends. So just bear that in mind as well. So if you do send a message on on a Friday,

23:54

the earliest that you would expect to hear from us would be on uh that Monday. Um we have our wellbeing support team as

24:01

well. So you've got wellbeing London port.ac.uk. Uh and generally for for the other teams

24:07

as well, we've got income at port for any questions regarding um finance. Um

24:13

so be it with installment plans or just general queries regarding your tuition fee uh that team would be able to to

24:20

assist you there. Um careers atport.ac.uk as well. So that would be there for any career questions that you

24:26

might have and they'd be able to have a look at your CV as well for you as well if you did want to um have somebody to

24:32

to give you a bit more feedback about what you could do to to perhaps find a position here. And again, if you do have

24:39

any specific student visa uh questions, please do take down the the the uh email

24:46

address there for um student visa port.ac.uk.

24:51

Um so they'll be able to assist you with that those initial visa questions as well if you do have any inquiries on on

24:58

that end. So we do have some key links here as

25:05

well just to help you get set up before you you do come to the UK. So I'd recommend downloading these apps. Uh so

25:12

be it from city matter, this will give you the most up-to-date information about travel in London. Um so uh if you

25:20

do live in London, you will get to grips with the potential delay. So it's good to have a look on city mapper just so

25:26

you can be aware of it. uh be it from uh traveling into uni. If you do need to

25:32

divert and uh change modes of travel, again, City Mapper is going to give you the most up-to-date uh information on

25:38

that. Um for TfL travel, all students would be eligible for the TfL Oyster

25:44

card. So, there would be initial 20 um signup fee for this. But essentially

25:50

this would give you discounted rates when you are traveling to uh university and uh to to all areas of London

25:58

essentially. So this will be for all zones zones one to six in London. Um and I would strongly recommend that all

26:03

students provided that you do have a London postcode um that you would have

26:10

access to the uh TfL travel um oyster cart to good to go as well is also a

26:16

good resource to have. So it gives you discounted food. Um so do have a look

26:21

into that. And Uni Day student beans um are discount sites for students. So you

26:27

would need to use your university email address to sign up for for um uh the the

26:33

services. But essentially it'll give you a good range of discounts. So help helps make your life easier when you do get

26:40

set up here. And again another good resource to have is Meetup. So this is an app that you can get on Android or or

26:46

your iPhone. Um and this will give you information about events that'll be taking place in London. So be it from

26:53

general networking events to to just making friends as well. So we do recommend having a look at this app as

26:58

well where you can find specific um key points um around London that might be of your interest. Okay. So um again, if you

27:06

do have any additional questions, feel free to to put put them in into the chat

27:11

box. Happy to to answer those. Um uh and and again once uh you do receive your

27:18

your your email for the Eventbrite link um we'll go over a student services

27:23

presentation where we'll go into into more depth in terms of some of the aspects that we've covered here.

27:31

Great. Wonderful. Thank you Hassan. Um okay uh thank you for listening

27:36

everyone. Um if you have any questions uh please do put it in the chat. We have um you know I have colleagues from

27:42

student services from UKVI uh compliance immigration advice as well as our

27:47

student ambassador Danush is here as well and also a few colleagues from the regional teams as well are available. So

27:54

if you do have any questions please uh put in the chat and we'll be able to assist.

28:06

Uh hi Muhammad I would like to add some tips for the students actually. Uh there

28:12

are some things I wished I would have uh known before coming to the UK which is uh getting a forex card before coming

28:19

here because when you try to open a new bank account in this country it will at least take from a week to 10 10 days. So

28:28

for until that per time time period you need to buy food and manage your

28:33

expenses. So some places only accept cash and um if you have cash that's fine

28:39

but if you don't bring enough card I think you can try to get a forex card in your home country and then transfer the

28:46

money to the car and then use that card uh for the time being because even if you try to open a bank account you have

28:52

to transfer your money from your country to here which will also take an extra 3

28:58

4 days and that is one thing and another thing is uh don't try to bring too much

29:04

clothes because uh most of the places here will doesn't have any um storage

29:09

capacities most of the dome rooms. So just try to come here and then buy the clothes because a lot of clothes you get

29:16

here will be used for this weather condition and know home country I don't

29:21

think they will have um enough clothes which which is suitable for this weather condition and also uh try to have your

29:29

uh uh

29:34

uh sorry uh have your address uh by where you're going to stay uh during immigration. So just keep it handy

29:40

because they might ask for that and uh you need to have at least like a proper proof of address like a receipt or uh a

29:49

booking site something like that. Uh thank you.

29:55

Thank you D.

30:01

Just to add um so I think Danish made a good point there as well with accommodation if anyone does need

30:07

assistance for finding accommodation please do have a look at the the London website. So we do have some key links to

30:14

some accommodation providers around uh London as well. So do have a look there

30:20

um for accommodation options as well. So, um, again, if you do have temporary

30:26

accommodation, we will be putting on a a speed friending event essentially where you can talk to other students that

30:32

might be in similar positions once you do arrive um where you can potentially find um uh longerterm accommodation at

30:39

that point as well. But if you do need any assistance with accommodation and you're not sure where to look, have a

30:44

look on the London website. Uh there's some links to accommodation there.

31:09

I also would like to add that uh from what Danish said, you will need to keep

31:14

evidence of your accommodation at the border just to make things easy. At the same time, uh since the e visa accounts

31:23

are quite temperamental, we advise you to print your granting letter and also

31:29

uh download or print your e visa and save a backup on your phone. Um so that

31:35

the board officials will uh do their internal online checks and they will

31:40

also sometimes ask you to show evidence of your e visa on your phone. So, please

31:45

do keep a backup or the best thing to do would be to print out a hard copy and

31:50

carry that with you uh just to make things easier at the border. Thank you.

32:01

Okay. Um I believe we had a student who had their hand hand raised. Um,

32:07

was it forum? I think forum, can you put up

32:12

your question on the question and answer box please?

32:21

Mohammed, do they have the option to unmute unmute themselves? I don't think so.

32:28

Did they? No, they don't. They didn't. They didn't. Yeah. Please put your question on the question and

32:33

answers box which you can find it at the bottom line of your screen.

32:46

Yeah. Uh she she wants to know more about the transportation.

32:53

Okay. Um yeah. So generally speaking um yeah so in London generally speaking

32:58

there's very good transport links. So as we mentioned in the presentation the campus is right opposite the um uh the

33:05

station the train station and the bus station. Um so the train station is on

33:10

uh a Victoria line which is you know which can take you from which goes from

33:16

Wam to like the other side of London essentially. But however if you want to get to central London for example it

33:22

will take about 20 to 25 minutes to get to King's Cross. And then from Kings

33:28

Frost if you want to from there if you want to you know go beyond London go travel outside of London then you can

33:35

get to certain places for example you know Brighton for example in 1 hour and a half you know of a place like Bath for

33:41

example in like you know in under 2 hours. So generally speaking, the area has very good transport links. Um

33:48

hopefully that answer your question for but um in terms of um if you're if you're in terms of like let's say if

33:54

you're talking about your own transport, let's say a car for example, if you do have a you know driving license from

33:59

your home country, you can use it to drive in the UK for just like one year

34:05

and then afterwards you'd have to you know apply for the UK license.

34:11

uh forum is specific about the airport transfer I think. Uh it sure um so I

34:18

think what in terms of what the university is able to provide is an airport meet. So we can just ensure that

34:24

um you you've arrived safely and and they can give you advice on how to get to to your accommodation. They won't be

34:31

unfortunately able to take you to your accommodation. But if you would like to have the airport uh meets set up, what I

34:39

would recommend is to contact the student service team. So if you contact student life london.ac.uk

34:47

um we can then arrange that for you. So what I would say please do give us up to

34:52

72 hours to get the booking um in place. It can take a little bit of time um and

34:59

it will just ensure that we can have somebody come and meet you at the airport.

35:06

Thank you. Um student Alia has a question. Uh what all documents are

35:11

required at the time of immigration at the UK airport the Heathro?

35:18

So it's mainly your e visa document u and then also confirmation that you are

35:24

one of our students at the University of Portsmouth and u it's also prudent to

35:30

keep any information of your accommodation ready. Uh if you don't

35:35

have any accommodation uh arranged prior to your arrival obviously you should have some contact. So if you've got a

35:41

friend whom you're going to stay with or any relative you're going to stay with temporarily even though if it's a

35:48

further distance away from the university uh have a some sort of confirmation in

35:53

the form of an email or letter uh or in the worst case scenario or even a call

35:59

just to say that um you are you will be living with the friend. But prior to

36:04

arrival is always good if you are living with a friend or relative uh get a short letter or message from them and a proof

36:11

of address of theirs to show that they are living in the UK and you will be living with them and obviously you can

36:18

say you will be looking for close accommodation to the university once you've um registered with the university

36:24

and seen the place. Just to add to that as well, if you want temporary accommodation, there is a travel lodge

36:31

as well opposite the the university campus. Um so you can stay there as a

36:36

temporary measure whilst you do want um find something a bit more long-term. Um so it is right across the campus very

36:42

easy to get to. Um so that could be a potential option as well um whilst you

36:48

are looking for something a bit more longterm. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Uh

36:55

there is one more question. Uh student Hamemed Malik says, "Hi, nice to meet you all. I want to ask what type of

37:01

questions does immigration officer ask at the border if we don't book any accommodation and we want to find it

37:07

after arriving in the UK." I think Fuzzman already answered your question. So you need to have a letter uh or an

37:14

email of your relative or a friend wherever you're staying for temporarily

37:19

or if you're staying at an hotel accommodation and uh apart from that you need to let them know that where you're

37:25

booking your accommodation if I'm right that's it right yeah and I think even

37:32

thank you thank you so Ma is asking a question again relevant to that uh he's asking he's staying at the friend's

37:38

place and uh what he has to show so again Miraa, it's the letter from your

37:43

friend or an email from your friend that you'll be staying at his place.

37:50

Yeah, a rental document would not be required. That won't be necessary, but just a message confirming and then maybe

37:58

a proof of address for the friend. Uh and in the worst case scenario, you can always call the friend. Uh but uh ensure

38:05

you have something to show the board official that this is address and know the address. we go by a postcode. So,

38:12

please ensure you know the postcode and the door number and the street because in the UK once you add in the postcode

38:19

the uh board official can find your address as well. So, please ensure you memorize or write down the post code of

38:26

where you're going to stay. If it's a hotel and you've booked it already, even if it's for one or two nights, uh keep

38:33

evidence of that and show that as well. Uh thank you. uh forum is again asking

38:41

actually I contacted but they're not providing on 16th September because I'm she's coming on 16th September so is

38:48

there a possibility to yeah that there should be a possibility so from what I would recommend if you

38:55

contact student life London um after this presentation and then we can have a

39:00

look into booking that for you so let me just put that email here um in the response and then if you contact us

39:07

we'll be able to to book something for Yeah.

39:16

All right. Thank you, Es.

39:31

Again, just a reminder, uh, registration is on the 22nd of September. So please do ensure you arrive to the UK a few

39:38

days before that.

40:03

If anyone has any further questions, they can put in the question and answer chat box as well, please.

40:37

So Jessica is asking uh after I arrive on 12th of September at UK when should I

40:42

visit the university? So Mohammed it should be 22

40:47

22nd. Yes. Yeah. And u Sad Khan is asking which kind of

40:54

clothes are best to carry with us.

41:00

Dhanush would you like to answer this as you all are already talking about it?

41:06

Um I would say uh just bring just normal clothes uh uh like a one or two formers

41:14

for the presentations uh later in the course. Uh I would say

41:19

just don't try to buy a lot of winter clothes in your home country unless it

41:26

is a cold like a cold weather country because uh I brought some bought some

41:32

hoodies and some uh jumpers from uh from my home country but when I came here it

41:38

was uh like like a normal t-shirt or

41:43

like a one layer uh it was not uh you know helpful for me because they didn't

41:49

have good fabrics uh for this weather condition. So my advice is just try to

41:54

buy new clothes here and then just get your regular used clothes from your home

42:01

country. Thank you. Thanks for that. Uh we have a

42:08

student from Bangladesh asking do I need to show all of my bank account or cards from Bangladesh? I have a freelancing

42:15

card like Pineer. Do I need to show it in the immigration or at the immigration?

42:23

No. Immigration at the border, they would not require to see any of your financial documents unless they have

42:31

very specific doubts. But as a student, you're not required to show your bank

42:36

account or bank details to the border. That's something you show to the UKVI at

42:41

your visa application stage. And once your visa has been granted, the border does not require to see any of your

42:47

financial documents. Uh you will just need a uh proper working card to use

42:52

once you've arrived in the UK for your expenses. Thank you.

42:58

Thank you for Yeah.

43:51

Just want to add Hassan regarding attending the university on the 22nd they will be receiving event bright

43:57

links isn't it? Uh so please keep an eye on your emails. You will be receiving links uh with the invitation to attend

44:05

on the day and on a specific time as well. Yeah. So, just to to reiterate what

44:11

Fasina said, it will have the the specific timings on when when you should arrive um on the Eventbrite link um that

44:19

will be sent to you soon. So, do keep an eye out for it. Um but again, if you're not sure if it if it's a bit unclear to

44:25

you, please don't hesitate to contact student life London and we're happy to to to just direct you in the right right

44:31

area.

44:36

Right. So Forum is asking uh she's arriving on 16th of September and when

44:42

she needs to come to the university it is 22nd September we said already forum

44:47

and she also wants to know the course modules so she can do some pre-study for better learning. So modules are

44:54

mentioned on the website under your course details uh for your better learning and uh how many days of

45:00

compulsory uh classes for students who are going to study in bachelor's in computer science she's asking do we have

45:08

the specific details to I think the hours of studies are also

45:14

mentioned on the website that how many hours in a week you spend in your class

45:20

uh you can refer to that forum and Still if you need more clarity you can also get in touch with me. Uh I'm Nisha and

45:27

you I think you already have my number. Just just to add in terms of compulsory

45:32

all sessions are compulsory. So the the only time when a session is not

45:38

compulsory is during the keep up catchup period of um a course. Again this sort

45:44

of detail will be relay to you more in the academic sessions um on on the week

45:50

of the 22nd. So on the 24th and 20 sorry I should say on the 25th and 26th

45:56

there'll be um opportunities for the academic team to to give you a bit more information about the the specifics on

46:01

what keep up catchup is um which is essentially like a revision period ahead of your your assessments for for a

46:08

module. But again the the academic team will go into more details on this. But in terms of compulsory sessions all

46:14

sessions are compulsory. Um so you do need to make sure that you attend every single class.

46:22

All right. Thank you. Thank you Hassan for that. Uh there is a student asking can he or she can get the online bank

46:30

account in the UK before coming. Is that a possibility

46:35

getting it online from here to access the account? That's not possible. I believe they need to be present

46:41

physically to get a bank account done and uh also it takes time. Yeah, as

46:48

Dhanush mentioned it takes at least 8 to 10 days or more than that. Dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dhush if you can just add

46:54

to it please. It'll usually take from um from a week

47:00

to 10 days. It depends upon the bank but it won't it it will it will take

47:06

some time but my advice is to just get a forex card from your home country.

47:13

Oh thank you Dash. So Sad is again asking so Muhammad you

47:19

going to answer him? Uh yes I'm just typing. Um yeah to answer your um question directly um Sad

47:26

Khan um um so yeah so yeah as um we mentioned earlier we do not have um airport pickup

47:34

service but we do have a airport meet and greet so someone will be able to meet meet you at the airport and be able

47:39

to direct you and sign signpost you in terms of where to go and how to get to campus.

47:49

So once we send this presentation over as well, um if anyone would like an

47:55

airport meet and greet, um feel free to to respond to Student Life London and

48:00

then um we're happy to to to get something booked in for you as soon as possible.

48:15

So um Bajul is asking will we need to do any will we need to complete online

48:22

registration for an ID check or something before arriving. So online registration links will be sent to you

48:28

before arriving. You need to complete that and for the physical registration that is on 22nd of se September. Uh they

48:36

need to take an appointment. So the the event bright link will have their their specific time. So um I think

48:43

for the time being if you do get any emails from the university regarding online registration try to complete

48:49

those um as soon as possible. Um again it helps you to get familiarized with our with our systems as well. Um so you

48:56

can uh get used to using um my port and the the website around that. Um and

49:03

again um just just to reiterate to in in terms of opening a bank account in terms

49:10

of starting work as well you can only do that once you've completed registration and you'll get access to um your online

49:18

course letters and online bank letter as well. Additionally something that we should also mention is that you get a

49:24

cancelled tax discount as well being a student at the university. So you can get that letter as well from your

49:31

student view. Um, so please do do have a look into completing the online

49:36

registration links. Again, you won't be able to get access to these letters until you've done your physical in-person checks. Um, but we can

49:44

certainly direct that uh direct you to to where to get those once you do complete your registration and and

49:49

attend the student services uh presentation as well during that week.

49:57

Thank you. Thank you, Hen.

50:20

Okay. Um, another question from um, Mad Khan. Should we bring our own laptop

50:25

with us or Uni will provide us? So, yes. So, to answer your question directly, um, Sad Khan, you should of course, yes,

50:31

bring your own laptop. Um again you the this is um you know um uh would you call

50:37

it you know it's essential for you to have your own laptop um I mean I believe uh correct me if wrong Hassan um the

50:43

university we do um like loan laptops for students that they can use on campus for for the day isn't it however when

50:50

you're doing your own work and independent study it's essential that you have your own uh laptop and equipment

50:57

just to add so we do have those laptops available for students to use on campus as Muhammad said um but we do have a

51:05

limited amount of laptops available as well. So it's not always a guarantee that there will be a laptop available

51:12

for students. So I would strongly recommend that you do bring your own laptop or if you do uh purchase a a

51:19

laptop once you do arrive um that that can be be another option for you as well. But we do strongly recommend that

51:26

students have their own devices and not just rely on the the the devices they have on campus. So, just to add in terms

51:33

of the campus timings as well, um the campus is closed by 6:00 p.m. um Monday

51:39

to Friday and it's not open on the weekend. So, if you did have any assignments or if you did have any work

51:44

during that time, uh again, it's it's much better that you have your own devices so you can work on it um and not

51:50

be restricted to to the timings on campus.

51:58

Also um Hassan, can you also touch upon um like the uh sort of like learning

52:03

resources that are available to our students on the London campus for example like the online library and any other learning resources?

52:09

Yeah, sure thing. So um in terms of the the the library uh online library so

52:16

with your university email address you would have access to various journals um

52:22

that you would use for for your assignment. So the the benefit one of the nice things about studying with the

52:27

University of Portsmouth London is that you do not need to purchase any course textbooks. So you don't need to worry

52:34

about that. All of the resources that you would need to to study for for your courses and and for the program is all

52:40

available online. So you can get all of these for free of access um where you would not need to purchase um any of

52:47

these books. Um, so I would strongly recommend um, again, this will be in in

52:52

IT sessions that'll be set up for you um, throughout your your early weeks at the the university, but you you'll have

52:59

the access to to those journal articles that will help you to to write your assignments.

53:06

Just to add as well, if you did want to use a physical library, we have the Wolf from Stow Library just around the corner as well. So students are more than

53:12

welcome to you to use that as well.

54:09

We still have uh time for more questions. We have uh four minutes left till this uh session finishes. So again,

54:16

if you have any more questions, please uh put in the Q&A.

54:34

Okay. Um, Hassan, do you want to um answer um Msad Khan's question um about

54:41

sports activities available with the local ledger center, etc.? Yes. So there there's uh Wolfam Sto

54:48

feelgood center which is around about 10 15 minutes away from the campus. So um

54:54

we will be looking to have them come to campus as well. Um so you can find out a

54:59

bit more about the resources available to to them there. Um what I should also add we have previously had a staff

55:06

versus student football match as well. So if you are interested in in playing football that is something that we can

55:12

look to to do uh further on down the line. Um just to so you are aware in

55:18

terms of facilities on on the campus itself we don't have any sporting facilities available unfortunately but

55:25

um as I mentioned Wolf and Stow feelgood center is around the university and with student beans and uni days you're

55:32

ellegible for um a range of discounts for gym memberships as well. So, you can get quite cheap um gym memberships using

55:40

uh your university email uh accounts and address.

55:51

Okay. Um a question from Raju. Uh should we apply for international driving license? Okay. So, with an with an

55:59

international driving license, you can use it in the UK, but you can only use it for one year. Uh and same the same

56:07

rule applies if you have you know your own driving license from your home country as well. So you can only use it

56:13

to drive in the UK for one year after that you would have to apply for a UK license.

56:19

You have to add to that as well. Um, in terms of, for example, if you did want to drive to the university as well, I I

56:27

I'd strongly recommend that you would use public transport as parking around the campus is not um not the easiest.

56:35

But maybe other colleagues can can comment a bit more more on that. But I would strongly recommend um that you did

56:42

use public transport um as as London is not the the easiest of places to to to

56:47

drive around especially around um university campus.

57:00

Um okay Fazmino or Hassan would you like to take this question? regarding uh seeking medical assistance

57:08

or help your uh you as a student will have you you will not be required to use

57:14

any health insurance per se. Your immigration health search charge that you paid cover with your visa

57:21

application covers your medical costs in the UK. So once you've arrived and you've registered with the university,

57:28

we will assist you with uh helping you to register with the GP which is a general practitioner and that will be

57:36

your go-to person for all your ailments and if you have a specific need uh with

57:42

regards to your eye or anything else, you will need to be referred and your GP will assist you with referrals. So you

57:49

don't need to worry about purchasing an extra uh health insurance to come to the UK. Once your visa has been granted,

57:57

your medical costs in the UK will be covered under the visa costs with the visa costs. I hope that helps. Thank

58:04

you. And also on on on the registration day. Um, so from from the 22nd, we'll have

58:09

our well-being advisor as well on hand and she'll go over some of the services available to you and she'll help you to

58:16

sign up with a local GP to your to your area as well. So, there will be somebody that will help you to to register with

58:22

the NHS if you do need that assistance.

58:29

Okay, thank you Hassan. Um, thank you all. It looks like we've finished right on time. Thank you for attending. Thank

58:35

you for listening. Uh of course if you have any um more questions um please feel free to contact us. Uh of course

58:42

for Indian students um you have the details of my colleague Nisha. Um again just to mention um this session was

58:49

recorded. So for any of you who have arrived late perhaps missed parts of the

58:54

presentation a recording will become available to you in the next coming days. But yeah other than that uh thank

59:00

you for coming. Have a good rest of your day, evening, night. Take care. Have a good day. Bye-bye.
